Never give up::

When the world says, “Give up,” Hope whispers, “Try it one more time.”

Everybody in life has some hopes and some dreams. A mental picture of the future that produces a passion in you. It could be having that dream car, that beautiful princess, that handsome prince, that dream job…the list is endless. However, there’s always a space between where you are now and where you want to be. That’s quite obvious! The one thing that marks great people in the world are those who have mastered the art of not giving up. Its one thing having a dream and a vision for your life, its a different story all together when it comes to fulfilling it. A lot of people give up along the way of achieving their God given dreams. This post is my attempt to diagnose the problem. You see, nothing good ever comes so easily. Consider the Jewish people who were in slavery in Egypt for over 400 years. They were promised a place of their own, a land flowing with milk and honey. The journey from Egypt to this paradise on earth was only an 11 day journey. However, they took 40 years. Out of an original 2 million people who fled Egypt, only two made it to the promised land. The rest of them died along the way. See, the problem is never figuring out where you want to go, the main challenge is choosing to be persistent and having the strength not to give up. This is because its quite inevitable that obstacles will come our way. The trials and tribulations. Don’t loose heart, all these things have been tailor made to build up our characters.

Did you know that Beethoven’s music teacher referred to him as a hopeless composer? Beethoven never took heed to those words and he  remains to be one of the most famous and influential composers of all time. A newspaper fired Walt Disney because of lacking creativity. Yet along with his brother Roy O. Disney, he was co-founder of Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. Albert Einstein school teacher told him he was mentally worthless. Regardless of His teacher’s opinion, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics, and one of the most prolific intellects in human history.

That’s why today I feature the story of a man who’s story is that of rugs to riches, a truly inspiring story to say the least. Ted Williams was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. Ted aspired to be a radio announcer when he was only 14 years old. Williams would later work overnight shifts for WVKO AM in Columbus when the station played soul music. However, in 1993, Ted got tangled up in drugs and alcohol, and eventually became a homeless man ever since. During this period Williams was arrested at least seven times on charges including theft, drug possession, escape, and robbery. He was also issued misdemeanor citations for drug abuse, criminal trespassing, and pedestrian solicitation. These resulted in two prison sentences with Williams serving three months in 1990 for theft and nearly two months in 2004 for theft, forgery and obstructing official business.

But regardless of such a past, Williams believed he had a God given gift still residing within himself. Ted took to the streets, holding a cardboard sign with a hand-written advertisement that said:

“I have a God given gift of Voice, I’m an ex-radio announcer who has  fallen into hard times. Please, any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you and God bless you”

A certain reporter happened to be driving in Ted’s direction and noticed Ted holding the sign, and in exchange for a dollar, Ted used his voice to make an announcement as a radio announcer would. The reporter pulled over, chatting more with Ted about his life. The reporter then posted the recorded video with himself and ted on you tube and a few days later, it almost had 3 million hits~yes, the video went viral!!

Subsequently, Williams received several job offers. On January 5, the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team offered him a job and a home. The offer calls for Williams to do full-time voice-over work with the Cavaliers and Quicken loans arena. Williams responded, “That’s the best deal ever!” On January 7, 2011, Williams was officially hired by MSNBC to provide voice-overs for the network.  Williams was also hired to be the voice behind Kraft Foods’ new TV campaign, which launched on ESPN during the 2011 Kraft fight hunger bowl on January 9.

In just a weeks time, Ted, who was homeless since 1993, was laughing all the way to the bank. Watch his story and hear the golden voice that is the envy of many broadcasters around the world. If this story is anything to go by, then a vital lesson which we should all learn today is that regardless of any insurmountable odds, keep your hopes high and never give up! As for you Ted, thank you for being an inspiration to many around the world.

Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn ~Harriet Beecher Stowe
